WALKING WITH GOD?

Key Verse
"And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters." (Genesis 5:22)
"Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." (Genesis 5:24)

Central Truth

Verse 22 says Enoch walked with God for 300 years. Can you imagine how in tune and intimate his relationship was with God? Enoch was a man of faith and his life represented his faith in God. Could we say the same about our lives?

Reflections

What does it mean to walk with God? StudyLight.org describes walking with God as a devout life, lived in close communion with God. Ray Stedman describes it as going in the same direction with God. He also describes Enoch as being in constant communication with God. Think about it: because of the amount of time Enoch spent with God (300 years), he got to experience God on a different level and got answers to a ton of his questions. Sometimes I sit back and think to myself, "What if my relationship with God was as deep and intimate as Enoch's relationship? Would I have a reason not to trust God with my life?"

Why aren't we walking with God the way Enoch did? As I meditated on that question, I began to ask myself a number of other questions. Questions like: why at times do I care more about my relationships with people than with God? Why am I so concerned about earthly things when Colossians 3 tells us to set our hearts on things above? How is it that I can make time for everything else in my day, but I can't find enough time to pray or even read to learn more about God?

StudyLight describes walking with God as being in close communication with Him. As Christians, we are supposed to be in constant communication with God, always asking Him, "What can I do for you today?" Think of Luke 10:25-28, when Jesus was talking to a guy about eternal life. A man stood up and asked Jesus what must he do to have eternal life? Jesus asked, "What does Scripture say?" The man replied, "The Scriptures say, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.' They also say, 'Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself.'" Jesus told the man he had given the right answer, and that if he obeyed, he would have eternal life.

With that being said, how can we love God as Scripture says if we never speak to Him?

Thank you, Kenny, for your insightful devotional and for inspiring us to walk with God. I have read about Enoch walking with God for 300 years but had never stopped to reflect on what that means to me. The Lord brought me to Himself when I was 9, and I have walked with Him for close to 50 years. I pray that in whatever years I have left that I will learn to walk closer to Him. Your discussion questions inspire me to seek what that might look like. God bless.

I found this devotional so very interesting and I thank Jamie for his sharing his thoughts about "walking with God". God told Solomon "If My people will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, then would I heal their land and forgive their sins" (2Chr.7:14) What a great start to walk with God.

Thanks, Kenny! Excellent job reminding us that our priority is to have a relationship with God. Can't do that if we don't spend time with Him! Appreciated your words!

I am so proud of the direction your life is headed. Your "GREAT GRANNY" would be very proud of you. We all must walk and stand up for God. You can almost see the handwriting on the wall. His words are true. It seems that most have put HIM on the back burner. WE know the way and from which all of our help come. I am forever grateful, and look forward for my daily walk with him knowing that one day I will rein with him.
