DANGERS OF ENTITLEMENT
- Key Verse
- "If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." (Genesis 4:7)
READ THE CHAPTER
Central Truth
In this passage, God highlights the progression of sin and His response to both sin and the sinner. In our humanity, sin tempts each of us. God warns us against sin, calls us to repentance, allows consequences for our actions, and yet lovingly offers mercy to the sinner.
Reflections
I grew up with a brother and sister very close to my age. I clearly remember arguing over who got the biggest piece of cake, the best seat in the car, or who got to go first. Each of us thought we were entitled or most deserving of favor. When my own children were little, they would ask me which one of them I loved the most. I would reply, "I love you each the same. Well, one of you slightly more than the others, but I can't tell you which one!" Each of my children confided that he knew without a doubt he was most loved.
In Genesis 4, we see a progression of sin that spiraled quickly out of control and God's response to sin that is unchanging to this day. In today's passage, sin began with feelings of entitlement. When I examine sin in my own life, I am amazed how often I can trace it back to feelings of entitlement.
God gave Cain a warning in verse 7 that is as applicable to our lives today as it was to Cain all those years ago. As I read that warning, I am thankful that I have something Cain did not have. The Holy Spirit lives within me and can help me to "rule over" the sin that "desires to have me."
If I ignore God's warning and allow myself to enter into the downward spiral of sin, God invites me to confess. God, holy and just, cannot leave sin unpunished, and earthly consequences follow sinful choices. However, God, out of love, offers mercy to every unworthy sinner, and if we believe and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He seals us with the Holy Spirit and guarantees us eternal life.
I am struck by the irony of this passage: that Cain spiraled out of control over favor that he felt he was entitled to, and yet ended with favor that he did not deserve. How true is this of every sinner saved by grace?
Discussion Questions

3. What unconfessed sin am I trying to hide from an all-knowing and all-seeing God?

It's interesting thst we all have a strong desire to be significant...special. We compete with others, sometimes cruelly and viciously. For "man's" approval. We are born into royalty, in a sense, since we are each created in God's image. What greater destiny could we seek or strive to fulfill? Why do we settle for far less?

Thank you Trudy. Great log. My sister and I fought all the time. She would get the best of me because she was 5 years older, but I would make sure she got caught when she was doing wrong :-). However, in high school, we became good friend and remained such until the day she went to be with the LORD. Our sin and selfishness kept us separated but through Christ we gained forgiveness and fellowship.

Thanks for your words, Trudy. Especially treasuring your remark that, "Cain spiraled out of control over favor that he felt he was entitled to, and yet ended with favor that he did not deserve. How true is this of every sinner saved by grace?" True for sure!

Excellent post. God truly desires intimacy with his children and that can only be accomplished if we pull away from the demands of life and spend time in his presence. The amplified Bible says he was in habitual fellowship with God. What a daily habit to develop spending time with God. Thanks again for the post. God bless
