GOD IS MY ROCK

Key Verse
"I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."  (Psalm 40:1-2)

Central Truth

No matter what is going on in our lives, God is always there for us.  He is the solid rock we can stand on in the midst of the storm.

Reflections

In July 2005, my best friend invited me to the baptism of her son.  As I sat in the church that day I was overwhelmed with this sense of peace.  It was like being able to breathe and I hadn't even realized I'd been holding my breath.  I vowed then and there that I would start attending church with my sons, and after a few weeks of searching, we settled in at HCBC NW.

A month later my husband filed for divorce.  I knew I couldn't handle all this by myself, but God had sent me an invitation that day in the church.  I clung to Him desperately as my life spiraled completely out of control.  I shed a lot of tears and prayed a lot of desperate prayers.  I was exhausted and didn't think I could go on, but God guided me, walked with me, and sometimes carried me as I journeyed through this devastating time.  His love and compassion overwhelmed me.  I spent many Sundays crying and praying in the back of the church, first begging for strength and protection, and then in gratitude for all He had done.

It was during this dark time that I came to know about His greatest gift.  I learned about Christ's sacrifice for me and I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior.  God found me that day in the church; He knew what was coming and He knew how much I would need Him.  He lifted me out of the devastation and has blessed me beyond my wildest expectations.  He has provided for me and guided me every step of the way.  He led me to a church and a Bible study, He led me to a job when I needed it, a condo when I needed to downsize, and then he led me to a God-fearing man who later became my husband.  He has even blessed our union with our miracle, Nigel.  I am overwhelmed by His love and grace.  THANK YOU LORD!

Discussion Questions

1.  Have you ever experienced a time when you felt you were stuck in the mud and mire?

2.  What "rock" (finances, marriage, career, friends, God) are you standing on now?

3.  Do you find it easy to trust God to guide you, or do you try to control the outcome?

Thank you Bindi for your transparent and powerful testimony. Later in Psalm 40:10 it says "I do not hide your righteousness in my heart. I SPEAK of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly." Thank you for your courage to share your story to minister to all of us that have the privilege of reading it..God is using you. God bless you and your sweet family!

Bindi, thanks for sharing at such a deep and transparent level this morning. Your journey shows how God can use our darkest times to draw us close to him and show himself faithful as the solid rock. I'm very encouraged by your story and pray God's blessing on you and your family. Thanks!

Wow Bindi, it's amazing, yet not surprising, how God gave you this particular chapter for you to share your story! Giving up our own control to let Him do His thing will always bring complete JOY to those who seek Him. So happy for you and your new life!

Your testimony brought me to tears because I have lived through a similar situation of divorce. God carried me and my children through it too and provided for me at my time of great financial and spiritual need. I am now married to a godly man who is my best friend. When I look back at all the miracles God has performed in my life, I am amazed by His love and grace. Thank you for sharing and reminding me again of His tender mercies.

I live in San Antonio so I do not attend your church, but I wanted to let you know how your testimony impressed me. Your willingness to share your story is what people today need to be hearing. Most of us learned a little song when we were young, "Jesus Loves Me" and although I am no longer a little kid, those words have seen me through many trials. Yes, Jesus loves us! May God continue to bless you.

Thanks for your testimony. This is very touching. I liked your question. What is your rock. Is it 1. Marriage 2. Finance 3. Career 4. Friends. None of the above. GOd is only the rock.
